Do your products contain Palm Oil?
Beauty and the Bees has been proudly raw palm oil free for over 20 years – long before it became a movement. We pioneered palm oil free, the first in Australia to remove it from our products to protect orangutans and their rainforest homes.
Palm oil once seemed like a wonder ingredient for skin. But when it became a biofuel, the demand drove mass deforestation in Borneo and Sumatra, pushing orangutans toward extinction.
We chose a different path. Over a decade ago, we replaced palm oil with Pacific Island coconut oil and USA soy wax – both rich, sustainable, and skin-loving. We’re proudly raw palm oil free, but also 100% transparent about cosmetic ingredients containing RSPO palm (*RSPO = Round Table on Sustainable Palm Oil governing body) which we must use, as currently there is no effective alternative yet available in Australia.
We are ethical so highlighting the two products that contain RSPO certified palm derived ingredients. Our Honey Silk Hair Conditioning Bar and Honey Mud Styling Cream Pomade – contain small amounts of RSPO-certified palm-derived ingredients (Isoamyl Laurate & Cetearyl Alcohol). We only source these from verified RSPO members to ensure minimal environmental impact and will replace these when an equally effective palm oil free ingredient becomes available in Australia.

How long do the 15g sample size Honeycomb Shampoo bars last?
On average expect the sample Honeycomb Shampoo bars to last 3 – 4 weeks but this is dependent on how long your hair is, how frequently you wash your hair, whether you dry the bars between use, whether you use hot or warm water and how many times you lather.
Do these Honeycomb Shampoo Bars actually work? I've tried others and they didn't?
We have been making soap shampoo bars for 30 years. Over the past few years we have developed a soap free range of pH Balanced Honeycomb Shampoo Bars which work well in all types of water. We use high quality powerful herbs grown in rich soils in northern Tasmania for high quality results.
Most people see results with the first wash, with clean, soft, shiny hair immediately but of course everyone is individual and results can vary.
Do you still need to use a conditioner?
Some people find that the shampoo bars are so moisturising and conditioning that they do not need a follow-up conditioner. We do however have over 500 reviews of our conditioner bars from people who love how soft, silky and nourished their hair feels. The conditioners are also well suited to extremely badly damaged, bleached or dry hair.

Moisture Creams
Which moisture cream should I choose?
- For normal to oily skin: Leatherwood Honey & Coconut Light Moisture Cream
- For normal to dry skin: Leatherwood Honey & Macadamia Rich Moisture Cream
- For dry, dehydrated, mature skin: Leatherwood Honey & Olive Ultra Rich Moisture Cream
What is Marigold and why is it in your moisture creams?
Our moisture creams are sometimes referred to as “marigold” because one of the key soothing ingredients in the formulation is Calendula officinalis—commonly known as marigold.
Calendula (marigold) flower extract is added for its gentle, healing, and anti-inflammatory properties, which makes it especially helpful for sensitive, eczema-prone, or irritated skin .
So, when you see “marigold” mentioned in relation to our creams, it’s just another way of describing the calendula extract inside—they’re the same creams, simply highlighting this special herb.
Do your moisture creams actually work?
The moisture creams were made 30 years ago in response to eczema and very dry skin. Most moisture creams are made with 90% water and a small percentage of oil. The water evaporates when it hits the skin leaving nothing to coat the skin and trap the moisture in. Our creams are super rich in beeswax which clings to the skin – keeping it moisturised and comfortable for up to 24 hours.
Why are the moisture creams so expensive?
The moisture creams are not expensive considering a 120ml jar lasts approximately 6 months if used twice daily. We only use the highest-grade ingredients to create a quality product so you are paying for a quality product. Our creams are water-in-oil emulsion. The total (expensive) plant oil content is much higher than the (free) water content.
Water is the first ingredient listed in your moisture creams. Why should I be paying for water?
We use water in our moisture creams to create an emulsion with the oils we use. This delicate emulsion balance creates a rich cream that nourishes your skin. The water also helps with the cream’s spreadability on your skin but evaporates leaving a rich layer of fine oils and waxes.
Are your moisture creams very rich?
Our moisture creams are made with high quality oils and beeswax which creates a moisturising film on the skin to slow down TEML (trans epidermal moisture loss). This keeps the skin feeling moisturised for longer. You only need to use very little of our creams to feel the difference on your skin.
Why are your creams so thick compared to others?
Our creams are water-in-oil emulsion. The total plant oil content is much higher than the water content. This produces a thicker, very moisturising & protective cream.
Will the moisture creams clog my pores?
They shouldn’t clog your pores. We use beeswax that is a natural substance. We don’t use petroleum jelly (fossil fuel) that can block pores.
Do I need different moisture creams for day & night, summer & winter?
This is a personal preference. Some customers like to use different creams depending on how dry their skin is, using a heavier cream at night and in winter.
Can I wear makeup over the moisture creams?
Yes. It is recommended to wait for 5-10 minutes for the cream to be absorbed before you apply makeup.
Are your moisture creams better than other creams?
Definitely yes! Hundreds of customers review our moisture creams on the website and Google reviews. The main reasons why our creams are better than others is because:
*we use premium natural ingredients, and Leatherwood honey and Leatherwood beeswax
*we use a lot of plant oils and butters, unlike commercial creams that are water-based
*they’re freshly made in small batches in Tasmania
*we don’t use artificial preservatives and additives
Are the moisture creams just for the face?
No, you can use them on the face, hands and all over the body.
Do you have a face moisture cream for mature skin?
All 3 of our moisture creams are suitable for mature skin. The Honey and Olive moisture cream is best suited for cold dry weather. It’s best to apply the moisture cream on damp skin – a little goes a long way.
What's the best way to use the moisture creams?
After a shower or after you wash your face, towel dry, immediately apply a bit of cream on damp skin. The cream will spread easily and it will not be sticky. Spend one minute or so to massage the cream into the skin. If it feels dry in some areas, you can apply more cream in those areas. If you wear makeup, wait for 5-10 minutes for the cream to be absorbed before you apply makeup.
Will the moisture creams help with eczema/psoriasis/contact dermatitis?
Our products are not medicated. However, many customers reported that our creams successfully help to soothe and manage skin conditions.
Do I need to keep the moisture cream in the fridge?
It’s best to keep them in the fridge, especially if you live in a hot, humid climate, or if it takes you a long time to finish the jar. If they aren’t refrigerated, the shelf life may be shortened.
Why do I need to use a spoon/spatula with the moisture cream?
Our hands carry a lot of germs. If you keep dipping your fingers in the jar, it may shorten the shelf life as the creams do not contain artificial preservatives.
Why do the moisture creams have a best before date?
We use “best before” date, not “expiry” date. It means the products is best to be used before the date. It doesn’t mean that it expires on that date.
My moisture cream is past its best before date, can I still use it?
If your cream is stored properly, you may still be able to use it following these steps:
- Check visually that the cream is OK (no mould or other growth)
- If it’s OK, then smell it to make sure it’s still fresh and hasn’t turned rancid
- If it’s OK, patch test on the inside of elbow or wrist
- If it’s OK, you can then use it
Are the moisture creams scented?
No, the subtle aroma is of Leatherwood honey & beeswax. We add healing calendula flower extract in our creams, but calendula doesn’t have much aroma.
Why do the moisture creams contain borax?
Borax is added in our moisture creams to help inhibit the growth of microbacteria. Borax is a natural mineral, allowed to be added up to 5%. We add borax at less than 1%, far below the limit.
Do the moisture creams have sunscreen in them?
No, we don’t add sunscreen to any of our product. We suggest you wear a wide-brimmed hat & a long-sleeved top.
Do you make bee venom moisture cream?
No. We use leatherwood honey & leatherwood beeswax, but we don’t use bee venom. Bee venom is harvested by electrocuting the bees. While many producers claim the bees aren’t harmed by electrocution, we much prefer to use honey & beeswax. We have a blog post about this topis here: https://beautyandthebees.com.au/bee-venom-in-skincare/
Soap FAQ
What's so special about your soaps?
Our soaps are luxurious, natural, detergent-free soaps that cleanse your skin without stripping the skin’s natural oils.
I don't use soaps. I use 'soap free' body wash. Is this ok?
Unfortunately, people now associate “soap” with “detergent” such SLS (Sodium Laurel Sulphate) and SLES (Sodium Laurel Ether Sulphate). Our soaps do not contain detergents. Our soaps are real soaps, made with plant oils, leatherwood honey & beeswax.
Are the soaps suitable for sensitive skin?
Most definitely! We actually have many customers with sensitivities, contact dermatitis, even customers undergoing radiotherapy or chemotherapy who use our soaps.
Which soap should I use for sensitive skin?
Please check the ingredient lists to ensure you aren’t sensitive to any of the ingredients. We recommend the uncoloured, unscented soaps for customers with sensitivities and we recommend you always patch test first. You can find the full range of products suitable for sensitive skin here.
Yes, we use lye to turn plant oils into soaps, but here’s no lye left in the finished soaps.
All natural soaps are alkaline (pH higher that 7). More important than pH is how emollient the soaps are. Our soaps are “super fatted” that means we add more plant oils at saponification stage. This expensive extra step is to ensure that the soaps are moisturising, gentle and with no lye left in the soaps (all the lye is completely consumed).
Use our Air Dry Soap Saver to prolong the life of the soaps or keep the bar dry between uses. When travelling, pat the soap bar dry, put it back in the vegetable-wax lined box and leave the box open so the bar has a chance to dry.
Which soaps are the most popular?
For international gifts: Tasmanian Lavender Flowers, Tasmanian Seaweed & Green Tea, The Tasman Tasmanian Dairy Cream.
Otherwise, customers choose based on scents that they like: citrus, floral, or unscented, or based on the ingredients such as poppy seeds or calendula flowers. Explore the full range here.
Traditional Soap Based Shampoo Bars
NOTE: while some customers love our traditional soap-based shampoo bars, our newer pH-balanced shampoo bars work best in all types of water and we recommend them for all customers.
I have hard water (high in minerals), can I use the soap-based shampoo bars?
The soap-based shampoo bars work well with soft water. In hard water, they may leave waxy residue on your hair so we recommend our newer pH-balanced shampoo bars.
Which traditional soap-based shampoo bar should I use?
- General use (moisturising): Tasmanian Apple Cider Vinegar, Voodoo Activated Charcoal Liquorice & Mint, Voodoo Activated Charcoal (Minty Fresh)
- General use (slightly oily, blonde or silver hair): Lemon & Chamomile
- Sensitive scalp, eczema, psoriasis, dandruff (from dry scalp): Happy Hemp Seed Oil
- Oily scalp, itchy scalp, fine/thin hair: Tasmanian Real Beer Shampoo Ginger & Cinnamon, Tasmanian Real Beer Unscented
- Dry scalp, frizzy, curly hair: Moroccan Mud
How often should I wash my hair with the soap-based shampoo bars?
There is no fixed time period to wash your hair, as the frequency depends on your hair & scalp, your daily activities, climate etc
Will I get a build-up on my hair from using the soap-based shampoo bars?
You can get waxy build up if you use too much shampoo, or if you have hard water (high in mineral content). For best results in all types of water, we recommend our newer pH-balanced shampoo bars.
Are the soap-based shampoo bars safe for coloured hair?
Yes, they’re safe for colour-treated hair.
How do you use soap-based shampoo bar?
A little bit goes a long way. It’s best to wet hair, wet hands, lather up in wet hands, use lather to clean scalp & hair, then rinse well.
Does the soap-based shampoo bar lather?
Yes, it lathers really well, rich & creamy, with no bubbles like detergent-based shampoo.
How do you store the soap-based shampoo bar?
It’s best to keep it dry between uses
*put it on a rack (not solid surface) away from shower water
*or use our Air Dry Soap Saver
*when travelling: pat dry, put it back in the vegetable wax-lined box, leave the box open to dry the bar
Are the soap-based shampoo bars safe for septic tank?
Yes, all of our products are biodegradable and safe for the environment.
My hair is greasy, limp, looks 'wet' using your soap-based shampoo bars?
This is caused by waxy residue on the hair from using too much traditional soap-based shampoo bars, or using traditional shampoo bars with hard water.
Mix 2-3 tablespoons of Apple Cider Vinegar in 1 litre of warm water, use this to thoroughly rinse hair and scalp.
You may need to repeat this if there’s a lot of waxy residue.
For best results in all types of water, we recommend our newer pH-balanced shampoo bars.
I still have frizzy, fluffly, unruly hair. What product can I use?
Our Professor Fuzzworthy’s Beard Care Gloss or Honey Mud Styling Cream Pomade can help with this.
Put a tiny bit in your hands & rub your hands to melt to wax, then run your hands lightly on the hair.
