Itchy Scalp? Epic Dandruff? Thinning hair? This Simple Five Step Routine Heals All 🙌
f you’ve ever dealt with dandruff, oiliness, thinning hair, frizz or dullness, you might wonder what’s really causing these issues. Surely you weren’t born with badly behaved hair… but all the expensive treatments and “hair vitamins” in the world never seem to work. What gives?
The root cause of sad hair
Here’s a simple little secret: most hair problems are actually scalp problems.
Your scalp is where cells regenerate, moisturising sebum is released and healthy strands of hair are born.
If your scalp is under stress, it’s going to show up as dandruff, itchiness, excess oil production, breakages, hair loss, dullness, split ends… pretty much everything that makes you cry.
But dry those tears! We’ve designed a simple five step routine that’ll help you grow shinier, thicker, healthier and more manageable tresses from roots to ends – and it’s as simple as a few new hair habits and targeted natural scalp care.
So, what are the five steps?
- Brush
- Shampoo + Scrub
- Scalp massage
- Rinse
- Condition
Do you have to do the whole routine every day?
Heck no. Everyone’s hair is different, everyone’s environment is unique (some of us deal with air pollution or hard water) and we all run short on time.
You might only add step four – a purifying rinse – to your routine once a week.
Or perhaps your scalp is especially congested right now, and working with our scalp brush (alongside a couple of cooling Apple Cider Vinegar gel treatments) will help you turn the corner.
Only you and your hair have the answers! But we do have some suggestions for mixing and matching the sequence – see below. (And just quietly, step one – brushing – is the only thing we’re hard-asses about. Brush daily. Just do it!)
The Director’s Cut: all five steps in order
The Daily Cleanse: steps 2 + 5
The Deep De-Clog: steps 2, 3 + 4
The Brush Up: step one
Step one: Brush for victory!
Regular brushing is how hair stays healthy. Your scalp produces sebum (hair’s natural moisturiser) and it’s your job to brush, brush, brush it through to the ends, keeping everything balanced and shiny.
We recommend investing in a natural high quality brush (like our Denman or Mason Pearson) and brushing briskly from scalp to ends 100 times each day.
This age-old practice heals dandruff, soothes frizz, regulates oil production and reduces the amount of times you need to wash. It also makes you feel fabulous by lowering stress levels and boosting happy hormones. Miraculous much?

Step two: Shampoo like a pro
Real shampoo is both cleansing and moisturising, filled with nature’s nourishment. You can’t go wrong with a Bees bar, so choose your favourite and make a beeline for the shower
Bee Healthy – busts dandruff, helps to mend the scalp + activated bamboo charcoal brightens greys and blondes.
Bee Shiny – brings strength, shine and softness to everyhead (even in hard water).
Bee Smooth – quenches your hair’s thirst, defines curls + calms the frizzies.
Bee Clean – mops up greasiness, build-up + grime for all day freshness.
Step three: Massage your scalp
How nice does it feel when the hairdresser gives you a head rub? As it turns out, spine tingly scalp massages are vital for healthy hair. They slough off dead skin cells, promote cellular regeneration and boost circulation, delivering nutrients to the follicles for thicker hair and faster growth.
We recommend using our nifty and invigorating scalp massager brush to tap into these benefits.
Massage it firmly yet gently over your scalp in a brushing motion (to avoid tangles) as you shampoo, working up an extra rich lather. The scalp massager also helps rinse away any residual shampoo (or conditioner) to leave your hair clean, light and bouncy.
Tip: It’s great for working Honey Mud Styling Pomade evenly through hair too!

Step four: Rinse, purify, fortify.
If you’ve got an especially unhappy head of hair on your hands – cloggy scalp, greasy roots or stubborn product build-up – a clarifying Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) treatment can really turn things around.
ACV is an age-old hair remedy. It gently cleanses, smoothes and purifies while delivering vital nutrients straight into the hair shaft. The natural acids and enzymes detox follicles while fending off the fungus and bacteria that cause dandruff – plus, it instantly corrects your scalp’s pH. The result? Glossy and bouncy hair with a new lease on life.
Apple Cider Vinegar Hair + Scalp Saviour Gel – a cooling herb rich gel that dissolves gunk + hard-water residue as well as moisturising and conditioning to reset your hair and scalp.
Apple Silk Clarifying Hair Rinse – a purifying powder that’s super helpful when transitioning from bottled shampoo to natural soap shampoo bars.

Step five: Get silky with conditioner
Unlike conventional bottled conditioners that artificially “gloss up” your locks with silicone (often leading to nasty build-up and pH imbalances) our conditioner bars are like nourishing wholefoods, feeding your hair with powerful Tasmanian herbs, honey and healthy nutrients so that it shines.
Apply one of our conditioner bars after you shampoo, working through your fingertips, massaging from roots to ends, and rinsing out. You can also leave it in for a deep moisture treatment.
Honey Silk – deeply moisturises, boosts shine + reduces breakage. Superb curl definer. Unscented for sensitive scalps.
Activated Charcoal – detoxes the scalp, boosts volume + acts as a natural toner.
Real Beer – strengthens fine or damaged hair, defines curls + smooths flyaways.
Honeycomb – golden honey goodness that’s suitable for just about everyone.
We hope our five step hair care routine is just the simple, natural beauty ritual you’ve been looking for. Reach out to us with any questions. May your scalp be healthy and free!
Russell KELAART says
Hi there
How often should I wash my hair, every night or once every few days or once a week?
Lani says
Hi Russell.
If you could, it’s best to not wash your hair everyday. Once every few days, or once a week is ideal.
But of course everybody is different.
For people who wash their hair everyday, our shampoo & conditioner bars are gentle enough to be used everyday.

Oh no! There’s no link to the ‘benefits of proper hair brushing’.
Also seeking advice on how to best brush my hair, do I start from the ends? do I have to work in sections? I’ve used a comb for the last 35 years, brushing is new to me!
